What does WPS mean?
WPS is the short for WiFi Protected Setup.
The WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) is present on most wireless devices today like cameras, wireless printers, range extenders and repeaters and so on. In order to make a connection between your router and the wireless device you don’t have to enter your SSID (Wireless Network Name) and your wireless password (network key). Instead, all you have to do is to press the WPS key on your devices.
NOTE: WPS works only if your WiFi network is protected using the WPA Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption.
What does the WPS button on Xfinity router do?
When you want to connect to your WiFi, you press it on your device, select the network name, enter the Xfinity wireless password and you are connected. The WPS button makes this connection process simpler and it is especially useful for devices that don’t have a user interface.
For devices with a UI (User Interface)
For devices with a UI, you press the WPS button on your router and it automatically turns on the discovery mode. Now take your device, choose the network you want to connect to and it will connect without asking you for your wireless password.
For devices without a UI (User Interface)
For devices without a UI, you can use their WPS button to quickly connect the device to the network without using a computer. Simply press the WPS button on your device, then the WPS button on the router and the network password will be sent automatically to the device.
Is WPS secure?
Although it really makes it very easy to connect WPS-compatible devices that don’t give us an option to select the network name or type in the WiFi password. However, this makes the WPS pretty insecure especially if the router is located in a place where anyone can physically press the WPS button. For this reason, we highly recommend disabling the WPS feature on your router.
