Virgin Media Hub 3.0 Lights (A Detailed Guide) – HomeNetworkON

As a Virgin Media customer, there are great chances that you are using their Hub 3. There are many mixed feelings about this router since many customers have been complaining about its WiFi range and internet speed. This can be pretty frustrating because the broadband internet speed Virgin media offers is one of the fastest.

Everything else on this router is pretty solid, like intelligent WiFi technology, Smart channel selection, 4-gigabit Ethernet ports, and so on.

In this article we are not going to write about the tech specifications of the Virgin Media Hub 3.0, but we are going to focus on its indicator lights and their meaning.

Virgin Media Hub 3.0 Lights

As always, the LED lights on the Virgin Media Hub 3.0 indicate the current status of our network and the connection.

There are three lights at the front of Hub 3, so let’s take a look at what they indicate and what is their normal behavior. We’ll start from the bottom.

Base LED Light – The first light from the bottom is the Base LED Light, also known as the Power light. This light will turn on immediately after you switch on your Hub 3. When everything is working fine the base light will be white. However, if you notice that this light changes its color to red, it usually indicates that there is an issue that requires our attention.

Internet Light – Normally, the Internet light will be off while we are using the router. While the Internet LED light flashes when data is being sent and received in other router brands and models, the Internet light in this case will be off.

Of course, there are situations where you can see this light. For example:

  • During the setup process, this light will be flashing.
  • When setup is complete, the Internet light will be solid green for about 2 minutes, and then it will go off.
  • A red Internet light indicates that there is a problem with our connection.
  • The internet light will blink green when a new firmware version is being downloaded and installed. When you notice this, the best thing you can do is not to touch anything. The firmware upgrade shouldn’t be interrupted otherwise the Hub 3 might be damaged.

WiFi Light – This light is the last on our list. When everything is working properly, you won’t see this light turned on.

However, just like the Internet light, you should see this light blinking while you are configuring the router. When you are done with the configuration, the WiFi light will turn solid green for the next two minutes, and then it will turn off.

Also, if there is a problem, this light will turn red.

The WiFi light will be flashing green when we press the WPS button. This indicates that the router is in pairing mode and is looking for another WPS-enabled device to connect to. Once the connection is established, the green blinking light will stop.

Virgin Media Hub 3 – Basic Troubleshooting

Since we have mentioned that the LED lights on your Hub 3 can indicate that there is a problem, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try whenever you are experiencing some issues.

Restart The Hub

This is something you can try whenever you have an issue with your network. All you have to do is to unplug the power cable and plug it back in after one minute.

When the Hub 3 boots up, give it some time to stabilize and then test your connection.

Check The Cables And Connections

Everything should be firmly connected so make sure to check both ends of each cable and confirm that they are firmly connected.

Is WiFi Enabled On Your Device?

Some laptops and computers have a physical switch or a button that enables and disables WiFi. Check whether you have turned off WiFi accidentally and try to connect again.

Connect Using The Network Cable

If you believe that the problem is only with your wireless connection, try connecting your device to the router with a network cable. If you still have problems with the connection, try the following solution.

Get In Touch With Support

If you have tried some of the solutions and the problem is still there, maybe it’s time to get in touch with support. This is the best way to see whether there is an outage in your area, or your ISP is performing scheduled maintenance, experiencing technical issues, and similar.

If there is no outage, you can ask them for help. Just explain the problem and they can test and reset your connection and help you fix the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Color Is The LED Light On Hub 3 When In Modem Mode?

The LED light will be magenta (or red as some people see it) when the Hub 3 is set to be in modem mode. Modem mode practically makes a cable modem out of the Hub 3. This will allow you to connect your personal WiFi equipment to the Hub 3.

How To Put Hub 3 Into Modem Mode?

If you want to use your Hub 3 as a modem, you need to login to your Hub 3 admin panel using the default admin login details that can be found printed on a label on the router. There you can easily find the section where you can switch the Hub 3 into modem mode.

Final Thoughts

As you can see the LED lights on your Virgin Media Hub 3 will flash only while you are setting up the router. When you finish setting it up, the lights should turn solid green for 2 minutes, and then they will go off. This indicates that everything is working just fine.

The only light that is on all the time is the Base light and it should be solid white all of the time.

As for the troubleshooting part, most of the issues you might experience with your Hub 3 can be easily fixed. Just go one step at a time and we are pretty sure you will manage to fix the problem without having to contact customer support.
