The globe on your Verizon Fios Quantum gateway represents the Power/Internet. It tells us that the router is powered on and that it’s connected to the internet. In that case it is lit on and it is solid white.
However, there are situations where we see a red globe on Verizon router – either solid red or flashing. Whatever the case is in your situation, it is good to know what does the red globe on Verizon router means. It will help us fix the issue more efficiently.
What does the red globe on Verizon router mean?
- If the globe light flashes red four times a second it indicates that the router is overheating.
- If the globe i.e., Power/Internet light flashes red twice a second it indicates that the router has malfunctioned
- If the globe is solid red, it indicates that the router can’t connect to the Internet.
Now when we know what does the Verizon router red globe mean, let’s see what we can do to fix the problem. Let’s start with the easiest one.
How do I fix the red light on my Verizon router?
If the red globe is flashing fast this means the router is overheating make sure that there is enough space around the router for proper ventilation and also make sure it is positioned properly – upright.
If the Verizon router red globe is blinking slowly or its solid red try the following fixes:
The easiest way to reboot the Verizon router is by pressing the WPS button at the router front panel for about 10 seconds. This will reboot the Verizon router and hopefully solve the problem.
In case the router reboot didn’t solve the problem go to the next step and check all the cables and connectors.
Fix #2 – Check the cables
Since the solid red and slow flashing red light indicate problems connecting to the Internet or a malfunctioning router the next thing to check would be the WAN cable. This cable is either the coaxial or Ethernet cable and it connects the router to the Internet. We need to check that both ends of the cable are firmly and properly connected.
Also check every single cable coming from and to the router and the ONT. Unplugging and then plugging back each cable is a sure way to check whether everything is properly and firmly connected. Just wait a little before plugging the cable back in.
Fix #3 – Sign in to check for outages
A service outage may be caused by bad weather conditions or scheduled maintenance. Since they both affect the Internet connection, they can result in Verizon router red globe. Sign in to the service outage page provided by Verizon to check if a service outage is causing the problem. You can also use their Verizon Troubleshooter to do most of the following
- Reboot your router
- Reset your ONT battery
- Check for service outages
- Additional Tips
It won’t take long to go through these fixes and you can expect your problem to be resolved in a few minutes.
Fix #4 – Reset the Optical Network Terminal (ONT)
Resetting the ONT is another fix that can resolve your problem. You can reset the ONT via the Verizon Troubleshooter we have mentioned in Fix #3, or you can do it manually.
To manually reset the ONT, find the Alarm Silence button on the battery backup. Press and hold this button for 10- 30 seconds. The lights should start flashing on and off or you will hear a loud beep. Wait for up to 5 minutes for the process to complete and all your Verizon Fios services to be up and running.
Word of caution: If the weather conditions are bad (rain, thunderstorm, etc.) don’t open the ONT or test the lines.
Fix #5 – Hard-Reset the Verizon router
The hard-reset will bring the router back to factory settings and clear all the changes you have made to the settings like the Wi-Fi password, custom network name (ESSID) and similar. This means that you will have to login to your Verizon router and configure it from the beginning. For this reason, we have left this solution to the end. If you decide to apply this fix you will need to configure your router and update the network name and Wi-Fi password in order to make your home network accessible again.
- Locate the red reset button at the back of your router.
- Use a paper clip or another similar object to press and hold the Reset button for about 10 seconds.
- The router will restart and boot up again. Wait until it stabilizes again.
- See whether the red globe on your Verizon router is still present

We won’t list this as a fix to the Verizon router red globe issue but if everything else fails this is the last solution. Contact the Verizon tech support and explain the problem. They will guide you through the troubleshooting process or send a technician to fix the problem.
